Agentic GTM

Agentic GTM vs marketing automation: what is the difference?

Marketing automation runs fixed rules you configure. Agentic GTM has agents that read data, propose and run experiments, and improve, with humans gating.

Marketing automation executes rules you wrote in advance; agentic GTM has agents that read your data, propose experiments, run them, and get better, with humans holding the gates. One follows instructions. The other forms and tests hypotheses.

TL;DR in 60 seconds

  • Automation is deterministic. You configure a workflow once and it repeats until you change it.
  • Agentic GTM is adaptive. Agents observe outcomes, generate new tests, and update their approach without you rewriting the logic.
  • The unit of work differs. Automation ships a fixed sequence; agentic GTM ships a stream of experiments.
  • Humans stay in both, differently. In automation you build the rules; in agentic GTM you gate hypothesis, copy, and ship.
  • Agentic GTM does not replace automation; it sits above it and decides what the automation should do next.

What marketing automation actually does

Marketing automation is a rules engine. You define triggers and actions ("when a lead downloads the guide, wait two days, send email B"), and the system runs them faithfully. It is fast, reliable, and completely dependent on the quality of the rules you gave it.

The limit is baked in: automation cannot notice that email B is underperforming and try email C on its own. It does exactly what it was told, forever, until a human reviews the numbers and rewrites the flow.

What agentic GTM adds

Agentic GTM puts reasoning agents on top of your stack. They read the joined data, spot where a funnel is leaking, propose changes with expected impact, run the tests, and measure results against revenue. Then they use those results to sharpen the next round.

The difference is the loop. Automation is open-loop: it acts and waits for you. Agentic GTM is closed-loop: it acts, measures, learns, and proposes again. For the full picture, see what an agentic GTM stack is and how AI GTM agents work.

They work together

This is not a replacement story. Your automation still sends the emails and moves the leads. Agentic GTM decides which flows are worth running, tests better versions, and retires the ones that stopped working. The automation becomes the hands; the agents become the judgement directing them. See how that plays out in practice when you run growth experiments with AI agents.

FAQ

Is agentic GTM just automation with AI copywriting?

No. Bolting a language model onto a fixed workflow still leaves the workflow fixed. Agentic GTM changes what runs based on measured outcomes: the agents decide which experiments are worth running and update their approach. Generating copy is one small part; forming and testing hypotheses is the substance.

Do I need to rip out my marketing automation?

No. Agentic GTM sits above your existing automation and CRM rather than replacing them. The agents propose and test changes, then use your automation as the execution layer to deliver them. Keeping your current stack lowers the switching cost and shortens time to first result.

Where do humans stay in the loop?

Humans hold three gates: which hypothesis to run, whether the copy ships, and the final push to production. Everything between, reading data and running tests, is the agent's job. This keeps strategy and brand under human control while the agents supply speed.

Which one measures results better?

Agentic GTM, because it is built to measure experiments against revenue and margin rather than opens and clicks. Traditional automation reports task completion, which tells you the workflow ran, not whether it made money.

Cadence is agentic GTM in practice: agents on top of your existing stack, humans on the gates, every test measured against revenue.
